  • Hey all you Blogger/Marketers in-the-know, I could use a little help...Please.
  • I have a website http://www.UnityHomeFitness.com and I want to create a blog for it. So far in my journey I've kind of deduced that I might want to do a Wordpress blog and host it myself somewhere - as opposed to a free blog at blogger.com or even Wordpress.com. I'm interested in creating the blog for traffic to my main site, Adsense and Aff. Mktg. Some questions I have: 1) Is this true that there are distinct advantages over hosting the blog rather than having a free one and what are they? 2) Is that a good choice? - Wordpress 3) I have a separate .com domain for my blog (homefitnessblog.com). Should I use that or possibly just add a separate site page to my currently hosted website (i.e. UnityHomeFitness.com/blog)? Do you know the pros/cons of either way? Any help would be appreciated, before I spend a whole bunch of time on learning Wordpress and trying to figure it all out on my own. Thanks, lbonline247 Lori B. more >>

  • Definitions of Hell
  • There are some who say that they simply do not believe in hell as an actual place of eternal torment as the bible clearly describes it. The fallacy, and a common one, is to think that what you choose to believe has any bearing on the reality of the truth. It will certainly affect your experience of the truth, but it will no way change the reality of it. By example; you may not believe that the earth is round because from your perspective it looks flat. Now does what you have chosen in ignorance to believe as true in any way change the physical reality that the earth is round? Of course not. So it is with the realities of the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness and the consequences of our allegience to God or to the darkness and the ruler of it. If you are aquainted with the word of truth you know that men believe a lie because of their refusal to love the truth. "And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness more th! an the light because their deeds were evil." John 3:19 Hell? Well, what does Jesus say about it? Can we choose to ignore the obvious content of Mark 9:43 "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched - "where the worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched"? Sounds like a place of perpetual torment directly related to sin... at least to me. There are many who are very sincere in what they believe, but if you are not careful, you can be sincerely deceived. more >>

  • What Is Business?
  • I wrote this article a number of months ago for a small side project I was working on and figured I would share it here as well. ------- What exactly is this thing called business? Well, you could look it up in the dictionary and get a very broad definition of it if you would like, however, if you would like to find out what business consists of and what it is perhaps this post can help you out. Throughout the centuries the business world has continued to evolve and grow as we learn more and people become better educated and as technology expands and becomes more of a part of a way of life than ever before. Ever since the Industrial Revolution in America big business has continued to grow and grow. Companies started popping up all over the place during the dot com boom. Whenever there's a new idea there's most likely a business of some sort that can be put behind it. The hardest part of starting a business is in most cases the idea behind it. Finding an idea or trying to think of a brand new concept and/or idea can be very challenging. Then of course, if you don't have the money to push this idea forward you need to find someone to back it or borrow the money from a bank. However, business varies in people's minds. Not everyone has the same idea as to what exactly business is. Perhaps they all have the same general understanding and certain concepts, but their goals are different from someone else's. In order to be successful in the business world you need to set goals for yourself, achieve that particular goal and then move to the next. Do not try to accomplish everything at once as you will most likely fail. Remember "Rome was not built in a day" - while that may be an annoying saying it is certainly true. Businesses do not grow overnight, they take years of planning and development. Now, you might be saying but so and so company seemed to just become big overnight - that is not true. Perhaps by the time you heard of the company they were already established and had their plans and goals and now were ready to rock and roll. The company most likely had existed a few years prior to you hearing about them and were in the stages of planning and development. I am a big believer in creating a plan and setting goals - then following through on them so once I accomplish one thing I can move on to the next without flip flopping back and forth and losing focus. Business is a game that takes skill, brains, and experience. In order to play with the big boys you need to know how they think and operate. Don't expect to be able to just show up and steal the show. Bottom line is quite simple. You have an idea, make a plan, set some goals, follow through with them. Don't let your idea go to waste, because you really never know what it could turn into. One small idea can turn into a huge business market. Who thought computers and technology would be where it is today? It's such a vital part of the world we live in. What if Bill Gates said "Hey, screw it. This thing will never take off, computers are going nowhere." The world we live in technology wise would be completely different. The same goes to say with any business though and not just technology related ones. Think of bottled water, Starbucks, fast food chains, etc. All they are doing is selling us stuff that we can obtain through other means, they just make it simple and easy. more >>

  • Common Business Negotiating Mistakes
  • I wrote this article a number of months ago for a small side project I was working on and figured I would share it here as well. -------- The art of negotiating a business deal is not trying to persuade the other side to believe your views, but make your views worthwhile to them. Also, and this is an important part, understanding the other sides problems. With that said you all are wondering what exactly I mean by that. Let me explain. Even the best negotiators in the world make these very simple mistakes. How do these well established, smart, and experienced business men and women make mistakes you ask? Well, it usually comes down to pressure. These mistakes can lead to money left on the table, things getting out of control and going downhill, which then could possibly lead to damaged business relationships. So what is one mistake people make when trying to negotiate a deal? Forgetting about what position the other side is in. Remember, you need to understand their situation as best you can. Knowing what you need out of the deal is not enough; you must understand the other side and do the best you can to put yourself in their shoes. This is the first vital mistake companies make when negotiating. Now let's give an example: Okay, so you're a brand new company, you just went public, you're doing well in the stock market and you have just invented a new type of computer micro chip. This chip out performs all of its competitors in every category. Apple has just contacted you because they want to use this chip in one of their new products. How excellent you think to yourself. Being a new company, and not having much experience yet in negotiating process, the first thing you do is plan out what you want out of this deal. Not even considering (or if you do, not as much as you should be) what Apple would like to get out of this deal. Throughout the negotiations you point out how much better your product performs compared to others in every field. This is what you think Apple would be interested in, which they are to a degree, but not as much as you assume. Do not assume - you can never be armed with too much information. Read about past deals Apple has made with other companies and see what the details or at least the general overview of the outcome was. By doing this, you can find a common ground to work with. Find out what they look for when negotiating, how much they're willing to give to get, and so on. There are many software tools out there today that can help you with this. Apple hears what you have to say and decides this is not the right path to take within about 10-15 minutes into the meeting. Why did Apple make the decision they did? Well, you must remember that when you negotiate you're not the only participant in this deal. There are two sides and both must find a place to meet and sit down for lunch. Almost as if you were in the college cafeteria and you had just gotten your food and went with your friends to sit down. The problem then arises, there is no place to sit. Why? Well, perhaps, what you should have done is had one or two friends find a table ahead of time and everyone else get the food and bring it to the table. Instead of doing that, you all try and get everything done at once, not thinking ahead or of the possible outcomes and it turns into a problem. Bottom line, you must always assess the situation in full. Do not just consider your situation, but consider all of the situations for each party involved. Failure to do so, will usually result in a loss of business or even worse, a loss of a business relationship. more >>

  • Effective Negotiation for Small Business Success
  • Negotiation is a normal part of our lives. Everyday, we engage in negotiation when we try to convince the cab driver to drive a little faster and try to take a new route to your office, when we tell our teachers that we need another day's extension for the term paper that was due yesterday, when we ask our parents to increase our allowance, or when we tell the police officer that we were speeding for a very good reason and should be spared from being issued a ticket. Everything we do involves convincing of some sort - whether it's with other people or with ourselves. What does it mean to be an effective negotiator? Powerful negotiation means having strong persuasion skills. We must be able to successfully persuade others to take our side of a certain situation, whether verbally or subliminally. Aside from being effective in persuasion, we must also be very good listeners. One effective way is by reading emotions through body language. After all, how else will we be able to win another person over if we don't first listen to what he or she is trying to say? Here are five things you should consider in order to turn your negotiation skills into powerful tools for persuasion. 1. Learn to listen - If you're doing face to face negotiations, let your interest show using body language. Lean toward the speaker and respond to the statement he or she makes to signal that you are recognizing his or her opinions. Make eye contact. Prevent yourself from being distracted by the people and happenings around you. Ensure that the other person knows, or at least, has the impression, that you are listening intently and are interested in what he or she is discussing. If the negotiation process is done via other means (not in person), try to be direct with your questions so you don't waste each other's time. Be patient in waiting for your turn to speak. Listen to the words unspoken as intently as the words that are actually blurted out. 2. Know what you want and aim to get it - Before you begin negotiating, you should already have a goal in mind. What do you want to achieve from the discussion? Be honest with your objectives from the start and don't beat around the bush. If you are direct, the other person will be encouraged to be very clear about his or her plans, too. 3. Be organized - Similar to tip number two, you should be prepared with what you're going to say before you enter into any kind of negotiation. Write your objectives down so you don't stray. 4. Don't judge - Pay attention to facts and avoid letting your emotions and pride get the better of you. Remember, you and the other person are in the same boat. He or she is also trying to persuade you into taking his or her side. Be open to a compromise. 5. Ask questions - When something isn't clear, ask. Don't let your passion to win the negotiations rule over the need to also get the other side's point of view clearly. And even if you already know the answers, you might not. Asking questions will ensure that the two sides are still in the same language game and are still referring to the same issues. In sum, powerful persuasion succeeds effective negotiation. If you know how to listen and air out your points clearly, the easier it will be for you and for the other person to reach an agreement. Negotiating does not mean winning a hundred percent. It means learning to accept and work with what works comfortably for all parties involved. It's a cutthroat business world we're living in; and in order to survive, sales negotiation training is absolutely essential. Whether it's a business arrangement or a personal transaction, how well you negotiate can spell the difference between profitable gains and financial disaster. Here are some sales negotiation training guidelines to keep in mind so you're never at the losing end of a deal. Common sense dictates that the better the product and/or service, the lesser you'll be wanting for customers. And if the price is right, they'll come in droves. But this isn't a perfect world, and there will always be a better price, a better commodity, a better competitor than you in the market. So the best way to stay one step ahead is to make your product unique. How? By making yourself unique. You, the seller, are part of the package. If you can't be the best or the most affordable, get back by being creative. If you can make the buyer's purchasing and bargaining experience quite memorable for them, rest assured they'll be back for more. Be truthful about what your customers should expect and always get to the point. Don't bore your buyers with long-winded sales pitches. Cut to the chase and let your product/service do the talking. Build good rapport so that buyers will see you as dependable and someone they can trust so that they will be more than willing to part from their hard-earned money. If your buyers are happy, they'll tell their friends about it, and their friends will tell their friends, and so on. Your business will have grown exponentially by word of mouth, and all because you made a customer satisfied. Customer service should be your top priority, and buyer satisfaction ought to be paramount, but only within reason. You have yourself to think about as well. Give in to every whim or demand and you'll be closing shop long before you close a deal. Take control of the negotiation process. Remember that buyers nowadays are market-savvy and they'll come prepared to whittle you down to the bare minimum while snatching as many concessions as they can get their hands on. A smart buyer will wait for you to talk first, but if you can get them to name their price first, then you hold the advantage. Try asking about their budget. They will give you the lowest possible figure, and it's your job to make a balance between what they are willing to pay and how much you are willing to accept. If a compromise cannot be reached, know when to say 'no.' Don't treat a deal like your very life depended on it. If you can show the customer that you are able to walk away from a potential sale, then you hold power over them. Believe it or not, they will respect you more for it and may even return to do business in the future. Buyers won't want to deal with overeager sellers who fall apart so easily and try too hard to please. Just as it does for sellers, sales negotiation training works for buyers as well. If you are the buyer, having other options is the trump card in any negotiation strategy. Never appear desperate and needy or you'll have practically given the seller permission to milk you for all you're worth. Know also when to walk away from any product or service. If you can do that, expect more trading to tip in your favor. So next time you find yourself at the negotiating table, wear your sales negotiation training like a badge and negotiate your way to a better deal. Everyday we come face to face with situations that test our ability to negotiate. Though you might not give it much thought, a lot of negotiation happens with people we meet and choices we make. Whether it's over a meal with your hubby, at the supermarket with the saleslady or during a lunch meeting with your boss, we need to grasp the basics of a negotiation skill training to make the most of these everyday deals. If you're still at the brink of losing opportunities and closing great deals because you lack the necessary negotiation skill training, then knowing the essentials of negotiation will open doors and doors of endless success stories for you! Read on and discover just how. 1. What's your goal? Be sure you understand this well enough to get your reasons and explanations across the other person you're dealing with. Have concrete and specific items at hand. If you ought to use estimates, be sure they are as close to the exact thing. Be careful not to overestimate or under-estimate. Remember, the goal of negotiation skill training is to come out with a deal that benefits both parties accordingly. 2. What's the other's goal? Keep your senses open to the other person. Listen attentively. The root of compromising is to know the other side of the coin well enough to make changes and retain the good ideas. Make certain that you are not biased in your decisions. Remember, the guy or girl across the table just might make sense too. 3. Respect "give and take". One of the essentials of negotiation involves understanding the process of giving in and holding back. You can't win it all. You can only hope that the best outcome will result from the compromise that both parties make. 4. Be creative. Negotiation skill training is an art to be enjoyed. When you come from opposite ends of the deal, come to a point where you can make your ideas meet and jive. Don't be afraid to explore other options! There you go, the next time you sit down for a deal, make sure you apply these essentials of negotiation skill training. Deal to win! Some people make it look really easy - closing deals and winning great transactions without breaking sweat. But do you know that there are ways to become s specialist on the essentials of negotiation and getting things done your way? The benefits of knowing the essentials of negotiation are endless! You can score many opportunities, create better professional relationship with customers and ultimately enhance your career. Read on to discover the essentials of negotiation and reap the benefits… 1. Maintain a relaxed mood. Keep a friendly but emotionally resigned front. It helps to be patient. In the total length of time it takes to negotiate, decisions and compromises are met at the last remaining minutes of the discussion. Keep it cool. 2. Always have your focus in mind. No matter where the conversation leads to or how hard the other party tries to mislead you, jump back to the topic at hand and retain your focus. Though this seems so simple, it is actually considered one of the essentials of negotiation. 3. Be open to options. Hey, who says you're supposed to get it all done on your own terms all the way? If it's not possible, don't just give in to the other person, ask for other options. Better yet, suggest some of your own. Do make sure though, that your suggestions are still within your negotiating capacity. 4. Point out both the "good" and the "bad". Making good negotiations entail many different decisions. In order to make good decisions, all the sides of an idea should be clear and known by both parties. Be sure you mention the risks involved while you state the benefits. It won't do your conscience any good if you won a deal by covering up some "cons" involved. The essentials of negotiation require you to be dedicated to your goal but also virtuous to avoid a possible backlash from unsatisfied clients. Good negotiators are not born with negotiation skills; they have learned and polished such skills through time. Knowing the essentials of negotiation will not only get you through that deal, it will make you spell success through the greater opportunities of life! -jd more >>

  • How Small Business Owners Can Make Every Dollar Count
  • (ARA) – Now more than ever before, it’s important for small business owners to get the most return on every dollar they spend. After all, as the backbone of the American economy, the small business owner’s success spells good news for everyone. “Small business owners recognize the value and importance of making their money work harder for them,” says John Durrant, Card Marketing product executive for Bank of America. “And with close to 25 million small businesses across the country, this critical segment of the economy is looking for simple, easy-to-use tools to make the most of their dollars.” From cashing in on rewards programs to learning smarter management practices, here are some tips for small business owners looking to stretch their dollars: Credit Card Rewards The credit card industry virtually pioneered the rewards program concept now widely used by companies from hotels, rental cars and airlines to restaurants and online retailers. Companies are making it easier than ever to redeem rewards. The latest innovation is a business credit card that gives small business owners double points for items they need most – like taking that important client out to a restaurant, making sure they can always fill the gas tank for their top sales producer or getting all their business supplies for the office. Bank of America’s WorldPoints Rewards for Business has no annual fee and offers two points per every dollar spent at restaurants, business supply stores and gas stations, and one point per dollar spent for all other purchases. It also allows small business owners to transfer points between personal and business WorldPoints rewards cards. In addition, they can earn bonus points by shopping at well known brand name merchants through the WorldPoints Mall. There are over 750 point redemption options, including merchandise, cash, travel, gift certificates, unique experiences and signed memorabilia. And through the MyConcierge service, cardholders have complimentary access to anything from a restaurant reservation to hard to find event tickets for an important client. Visit your local Bank of America banking center to apply for the rewards card with the double points feature. Save a Bundle with Bundled Products From phone, internet and cable for the home or office to insurance carriers who offer discounts for multiple policies, small business owners can easily make their money work harder for them by leveraging the bundling bandwagon. Often, a packaged deal is a significant savings over what you would pay for each component separately. Plus, buying bundled products can save small business owners valuable time they would otherwise spend investigating individual product alternatives. Don’t Do it Yourself Initiative and self-motivation are the hallmarks of every great entrepreneur, but for many small business owners, doing everything themselves might not make the most business sense. If obligations such as payroll and accounting are taking a small business owner’s time away from aspects of their business that generates revenue, then they are actually losing money. Every hour wasted adds up to actual dollars off the bottom line. “In today’s market, small business owners have access to a wide range of products and services that can help them more easily manage their financial affairs,” said Durrant. “Bank of America offers a full portfolio of products that help small business owners reduce the time spent managing finances from hours to just minutes.” A competitive and highly technological marketplace means more opportunities than ever for small business owners to save money. • (ARA) – It's never too late to take the time to get your life in order. Every year, millions of Americans vow to change their lives: new job, new eating habits, new outlook on life. But many times, change is easier said than done.

Hollywood life coach Sherri Ziff Lester of Rock Your Life Coaching helps educate Americans about how small, sustainable changes can have big, positive impact.

“When you want to make a positive change, like modify a behavior or take on something new, it is important to understand that change is a gradual process that takes time,” says Ziff Lester. “I have found that the easiest and most effective way to achieve a goal is to break it down into a small, specific step you can reasonably accomplish each day.”

Additionally, Ziff Lester notes that small goals mean making small changes which are easier to incorporate and maintain in any lifestyle. Numerous common goals can be broken down into mini steps to get closer to a larger accomplishment.

“If you want to eat healthier or reduce calories, for example, don’t deprive yourself of sweets. Instead, try substituting Splenda No Calorie Sweetener for sugar. If people start off small, they will see encouraging improvements motivating them to move forward with loftier goals.”

Ziff Lester offers the following tips to help consumers make small lifestyle changes, both personally and professionally, that will ultimately yield big results:

    * Vowing to spend more time with your friends and family? Rather than focusing on an entire evening out, nurture relationships in short bursts. Try a 20 minute coffee date, meet at the grocery store to shop together or arrive five minutes early to pick up your kids at school and chat.

    * If you want to eat healthier, start with something you can easily change. Make a pledge to reduce sugar throughout the day by stocking your purse with new Splenda No Calorie Sweetener Minis -- they’re convenient and add guilt-free sweetness to coffee or tea.

    * If you want to get out of debt, don’t commit to a large sum of money you hope to pay throughout the year. Start small by developing a budget plan at the beginning of each month which details your spending and saving habits for that 30-day period.

    * If getting fit is a goal, don’t vow to hit the gym seven days a week. Start small by signing up for a once-a-week exercise class. The time commitment is more manageable and the class schedule will hold you accountable.

    * Trying to get rid of all that clutter in your life? Don’t take on the whole house; focus on just one drawer or congested corner. Identify at least five things you can part with and put them in your car to take the nearest charity next time you are running errands.

    * If you want to expand your horizons and meet new people, don’t spread yourself too thin by making plans every night of the week. Instead, join a monthly book club or consider getting involved in a local charity event.

    * Have too much on your plate? Learn to say no -- pinpoint two or three commitments that you can cut back to focus on what you really want to accomplish. Then say yes to small, meaningful steps to achieve that goal.

    * If you want to be more charitable, don’t donate money to every cause. Choose an organization near and dear to your heart and donate your time and resources by participating in their charity events several times a year.

  • The New Role of the Accountant in Business
  • (ARA) - If you hear the word CPA and think of bookkeepers, brown suits, pocket protectors, and gnawed off pencils, then you are way behind the times. While accounting has long conjured images of number crunching and bookkeeping, today's accountants are also at the forefront of dramatic changes in the business world. "Accounting has always been a crucial part of running a business. You simply can't run an efficient or profitable company if you aren't keeping an eye on your books," says Heidi Godbold, academic program director at Everest College in Colorado Springs, Colo. She explains that with computers and other technological advances eliminating the most tedious parts of accounting, accountants are taking on new roles in business. "The role of an accountant is being transformed from simply helping a business run to helping a business envision its future." * Estimating and evaluating risk management "Businesses need accountants to identify and manage risk. They are increasingly part of the team that helps a CEO decide which investments are worth the risk," says Godbold. In fact, a degree in accounting has always been a great way to get into the business world. In addition to technological advances, Everest College’s Godbold lists a number of non-technological factors that are changing the accounting field, including demographics, globalization and corporate scandals. "The reality of demographics is something we can't ignore. Millions of accountants from the baby-boomer generation are expected to retire in the next five to ten years. This means that accountants at all levels of experience will be in demand," she says. * Globilization Globalization is another factor changing the accounting field. "Due to the growth of international trade and business, companies are increasingly looking for accountants that have a good understanding of international business, who speak a foreign language or who are available to work overseas," says Godbold. * Fair Value Accounting Roxanne Phillips, accounting faculty member at Everest College explains another exciting development in the accounting field, known as fair value accounting. "Recently, we have actually seen the emergence of a new approach to accounting and risk, called fair value accounting." Fair value accounting recognizes the current worth of assets, instead of the cost of acquiring them. "It seems like a simple premise, but it is actually challenging the very foundations of traditional accounting. Fair value accounting is helping CEOs reevaluate the current worth of their companies and better assess what they can afford to invest," says Phillips. * Forensic accounting Recent media attention from corporate accounting scandals has also increased the demand for accountants with experience in fraud-detection, making forensic accounting degrees in high demand. "In the past, businesses waited until an ethics breach was suspected before investigating, but today, many companies are realizing they can't afford to wait," says Phillips. They are bringing in forensic accounting specialists to tighten procedures and prevent fraud before it happens." Phillips explains the need for accounting schools to adapt to these changes. "In our accounting courses at Everest College, we realize that if we really want to prepare our graduates to be the next wave of accountants, then we have to stay abreast of recent developments in the accounting field." She explains that all of these changes are making accounting very appealing to students. "We tell our students this isn't their father's accounting field." Phillips says that students are very excited about all the possibilities an accounting degree brings. "When our students learn about the possibility of working in international business or fraud investigation, they always want to learn more." Phillips says that even if they aren't interested in a specific kind of accounting, they are interested in the job security. "At the very least, our students know they will be in high demand upon graduating. For some students, that's all they need to know." • Looking for a Smart Business Opportunity in a Recession?
  • (ARA) – There have been a lot of warning signs lately that our nation is headed towards a recession. The stock market is down, unemployment is up and the real estate market is in a slump.

Historically, in times like these many retail businesses struggle because consumers cut back on unnecessary spending. For people worried about money because of the recession, now is a good time to take control of their financial future by starting a low risk online business according to Scott Fox, author of “Internet Riches” published by AMACOM.

“Unlike brick-and-mortar businesses that have high startup costs to worry about, Internet businesses can be started on a shoestring budget when times are tough, and some online businesses can even be started for free,” says Fox. “This can create new income streams for the entrepreneur on the side or part-time, and depending on the business, once it’s up and running can cost very little to maintain the business.”

Fox has been studying the dynamics that drive Internet business since the early 1990s when he was a graduate student at Stanford University. Since finishing school, he has either started up or helped launch several successful online companies.

The most important advice Fox offers business owners-to-be is to start up a company they can be passionate about. “Most successful business ideas are simple and grow out of the entrepreneur’s personal experiences,” says Fox. “The key to finding the right new business is to combine a person’s skills, interests, and hobbies to target the right group of customers with in-demand products and services that will help them solve their problems in a cost-effective manner.”

A classic cars enthusiastic might start an e-business that brings together buyers and sellers of spare parts for a particular type of car. A collector of old bottles might discover through online research that there are lot of people who would flock to a Web site that sells pieces gathered at estate sales.

Once entrepreneurs come up with their idea, the next step is to start building the business. “Before you can sell anything, you’ll need to have several services in place,” says Fox. “You need a professional-looking Web site, a method for collecting and managing e-mail addresses and a publishing program that will allow you to send out e-newsletters to customers and potential customers.” Depending on whether the business is ad-based or an e-commerce venture, entrepreneurs will need either a shopping cart or a free account with an advertising placement service like Google’s Adsense. And Fox points out, “This can all be done inexpensively. In fact, much of this can be found online with no upfront cost.”

Marketing the site is also very important. “A good place to start is by exchanging links and banners with other Web sites if there isn’t a large marketing budget,” says Fox. “Getting a URL listed on both Google and Yahoo so potential customers can find the business is key, and can be done for free.” Another good marketing strategy is pay-per-performance keyword advertising. “This allows entrepreneurs to advertise worldwide, but they only pay when a person clicks to visit their website,” say Fox.

Once an e-business is established, the expenses associated with running it can be almost non existent. Fox estimates operating expenses are just $25 per month. “You just have to pay for Internet access, a phone line and Web site maintenance,” he says. “No rent, signage, insurance, furnishings or postage expenses.”

Perhaps the biggest draw to starting an online business is that it allows people to take control of their life. “Anyone can start an online business part-time,” says Fox. “It can supplement a person’s regular income and may allow them to quit their job and be their own boss. And that’s very appealing to many people,” he adds.

Starting up an e-business is not without challenges, and Fox maintains a blog at www.ScottFox.com and www.ScottFoxblog.com, where entrepreneurs can turn for answers when they get stuck. “I try to post as many questions and answers as I can daily,” says Fox.

Internet Riches is available at your local bookstore or an online seller.

  • The Secret to Success in a Slow Economy

  • (ARA) – “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness.” In the first few lines of “A Tale of Two Cities,” Charles Dickens was referring to conditions in the years leading up to the French Revolution; but he could just as easily have been writing about society today.

While we live in one of the most prosperous countries in the world, many Americans have in some way been negatively affected by problems with the current economy. The credit crunch has persisted despite aggressive Federal Reserve interest rate cuts; retail sales are down; thousands are concerned about losing their homes due to the sub prime mortgage crisis; and gas is so expensive, a lot of people have been forced to park their cars for the foreseeable future.

As if those problems weren’t bad enough, many Americans go from day to day fearing they may lose their jobs. For Shawn Crawford, 38, of Brownsburg, Ind., a suburb of Indianapolis, you could say the writing was on the wall. He used to be the director of operations for a physician group that operated 30 doctor’s offices across the state of Indiana.

“I was responsible for set up, business development and customer service,” he says. “At first I found the job very rewarding, but once the economy started to get bad and the rapid expansion stopped, it reached a point where I feared my own job was about to be eliminated.”

Instead of waiting around to see what would happen, Crawford decided to follow his dream to start his own business. In July of 2006, he quit his job with the physician’s group and became a consultant; but spent every spare moment researching business opportunities.

“I wanted to do something that would capitalize on my experience and help people at the same time,” he says. “I figured people want to look good, feel good and be healthy, so why not open a gym?” But when he started looking into the costs involved in such a venture he became discouraged, that is until he came across some research that showed huge growth potential in health and fitness franchising. According to the International Health and Racket Sport Club Association, while the average growth rate for fast food franchises stands at 20 percent, the fitness sector’s five-year growth has been an impressive 144 percent.

There are a lot of health and fitness franchises out there, but the one Crawford decided to go with was Snap Fitness, a Minnesota-based fast-growing franchisor of compact, state-of-the-art 24/7 fitness centers in Canada and the United States. “The thing I liked best about Snap initially was their business model was pretty much turn-key,” says Crawford. “Unlike a traditional business start-up which would have required a lot of research, development and capital investment on my part, they did all the work for me.”

After he paid his franchise fee and found the perfect location, Snap Fitness provided the blueprint he needed to follow to get his business up and running. He was assigned a project manager who helped him every step of the way.

“The process was laid out and very easy to follow,” explains Crawford. “Snap provided everything I needed to get started – plans for the club design, access to vendors who would sell me the right equipment at a deep discount, all the tools I needed to set up my company Web site and the marketing materials I needed to get the word out.”

Snap also provided the financing, and today handles billing, security and other operational and marketing support for Crawford’s club, which opened for business in October of 2007 and now has about 900 members.

When people ask him for advice about franchising, Crawford advises them to do some investigative work. Talk to a business broker, pick up and read copies of Entrepreneur and the Wall Street Journal, and when they’re ready to proceed contact a franchisor like Snap Fitness directly. Most franchisor Web sites provide rich information about the business model, financial requirements and much more, and they grant access to executives and franchisees during your discovery process.

“We understand what a big decision opening a franchise can be, and that’s why I personally meet weekly with prospective franchisees to answer questions and help them make a decision that’s right for them,” says Snap Fitness CEO Peter Taunton.

“I followed the plan Snap gave me, and I’m quite pleased with my financial success, says Crawford, who is set to open his second Snap Fitness club sometime in April of 2008.

  • Secrets of Data Organization for Small Businesses

  • (ARA) – Are you still storing your business contact info in your e-mail program or on your cell phone? Or, worse yet, is your “database” a collection of business cards stashed in a shoe box? Stunning as it may seem, a significant number of small business owners still use outdated methods to store important business contact information.

“No matter their size or the sum of their annual receipts, businesses live or die on data,” says Tom Stearns, a data organization expert with CardScan. “For small businesses that rarely have access to advanced IT support, successfully organizing and protecting contact information can mean the difference between success and disaster.”

Organized contact information provides numerous benefits to small business owners, including less time spent developing mailing lists for marketing materials, and improved customer service. Paper documents, such as business cards, can get lost or damaged and are difficult to organize. Putting information on a computer hard drive can help organize information and make accessing it easier, but may also put it at risk if your desktop crashes or your laptop is stolen.

Stearns offers the following tips for small business owners looking to organize their contact data:

    * If you haven’t already done so, consider putting your collection of business contact information into an electronic format. Readily available software makes it easy to capture and organize information.

    * Look for programs, like CardScan software, that make it easy to input data. You’ll want to be able to scan hard copy business cards, but also be able to consolidate data from other software applications such as Outlook. The easier the better, too; CardScan actually allows you to highlight contact information in an e-mail or on a Web page, then drag and drop it into the CardScan program. The software automatically recognizes data fields and organizes them accordingly.

    * Applications like Outlook are capable of helping you store and organize data, but aren’t dedicated to the task. Consider software that is specifically designed for data organization, especially one that is made with small businesses in mind.

    * Be sure your database software can be synced with your other electronic devices or software, such as your mobile device, BlackBerry, smart phone or e-mail application. This ability will help ensure information remains current across all applications and devices you may use to access it.

    * Backup your data regularly. There are a number of ways to backup data, but backing up to an online service offers several unique advantages, Stearns says. For example, users of CardScan At Your Service can opt to have their data backed up automatically on a regular basis. Further, the service automatically updates whenever you add or change information.

    * When scanning business cards, opt for an application that prompts you to check the accuracy of information. “It may seem convenient to use software that directly captures information into an e-mail application like Outlook, but that can create data errors and duplications,” says Stearns. Choose software, like CardScan, that recognizes potential errors and duplications, and prompts you to verify information before it’s incorporated into your address book. “CardScan software interacts with the user during the capture process, so when it flags a potential duplication, you will actually see an alert that highlights the dupe and helps you reconcile any new information.”

  • Meetings with a Mutt? More Pets Sharing Office Space

  • (ARA) - Dogs and cats and fish, oh my! More than 63 percent of American households own a pet today, which equates to 71.1 million homes and a whopping 382.2 million pets, according to a recent American Pet Products Manufacturers Association survey of pet owners. So are Fluffy and Fido just hanging out at home, or are they going to work with their human companions?

Pets, it seems, are showing up in the workplace more than ever, with 30 percent of employers allowing workers to bring pets to the office, according to a recent consumer survey commissioned by The HON company, a leading designer and manufacturer of office furniture. Of those who actually bring their pets to work, the majority of Americans bring dogs (24 percent), followed by fish (12 percent) and cats (8 percent).

    Dog Days in the Office
Visitors to The Warehouse Office Furniture Mart, a Cincinnati-based contract furnishing dealership that sells HON office furniture, can expect to be greeted by a couple of unusual “customer service representatives” when they enter the showroom. Jake and Woody, Labrador Retrievers owned by the company’s president, Jack Keane, can be seen daily at the dealership.

Since 2000, Keane has encouraged employees to bring in any well-behaved pet to spend the day in the company of the dealership’s staff and customers. He even encourages customers to bring their dogs along when they visit the showroom.

The affable and quite mannerly pair – often referred to as the “star customer relations team” – spend their days tethered on long leads in the 15,000-square-foot showroom’s office area. This arrangement allows them plenty of interaction with dog-loving customers but keeps them out of the way of the handful of those a little more canine-wary.

“We’ve had at least 95 percent positive feedback on Jake and Woody’s daily presence,” Keane says of the boys.

Keane’s business isn’t alone in cultivating a pet-friendly atmosphere. A recent search online at Simply Hired (www.simplyhired.com), an online job search engine, turned up 8,100 open jobs at pet-friendly companies, including natural candidates like PetSmart and IAMS Pet Food; but also big names such as Google, Amazon.com and even Dartmouth College.

There are other benefits to having pets in the office – millions of Americans believe pets on the job lower absenteeism and encourage workers to get along, according to responses from both the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association and HON surveys.

Keane feels having Jake and Woody in the showroom actually helps build top-of-mind awareness for his business, too.

“People definitely remember our showroom,” he says. “It’s a great way to reach out to customers, especially dog lovers, and make ourselves stand out from the competition.,”
